Beneath the Cretan Sun, a little island called Spinalonga flooding with mysteries waits for travelers to uncover.
Surrounded by turquoise waters that are home to a variety of small sea life, near Elounda area, is the old Venetian city built on top of Spinalonga to keep the ill away from the healthy population. The Lepra illness was a highly contagious disease that caused a lot of pain, swollenness, and most apparent and horrifying symptoms the gradual fall of a human’s face.
Spinalonga is a small island located in the Gulf of Elounda, off the northeastern coast of Crete, Greece. It's famous for its rich history and unique role as a leper colony. The island’s most notable features are its Venetian fortress, picturesque views, and the haunting history that surrounds it.
This freighting illness was kept sealed in Spinalonga, that its habitants had no or little connection with the rest of the world and of course its supplies. From 1903 to 1957 there wasn’t a touristic boat to bring people here, as it was forbidden. Yet, somehow amidst illness and stigma, life bloomed. Children played, shops opened and music echoed through the same alleys that people had lost all hope.
Today, Spinalonga is a touristic attraction with its main castle to be seen from far away, as its tiny abandoned homes are waiting for visitors from all over the world to explore them. Admittedly, one of the most majestic hours for exploration is when the sunlit escape through the holes of stone- built establishments, as guides narrate the harsh conditions of the daily lives of the ill.
- Venetian Era: Spinalonga was originally fortified by the Venetians in the 16th century to defend against pirates and the Ottoman Empire. The island's strategic location made it an important military stronghold.
- Leper Colony: In the early 20th century, the Greek government decided to turn Spinalonga into a leper colony. From 1903 until 1957, people with leprosy were sent there, and it became the last active leper colony in Europe. It was isolated from the rest of the population, and the inhabitants were forced to live in harsh conditions.
- Post-Leper Era: After the closure of the leper colony, Spinalonga was abandoned, but the remnants of the buildings and the fortress remain, making it a popular tourist attraction today.
It is worth mentioning that an old hospital, school, the bakery and the church are accessible, in order for everyone to have a look at how stigma had a huge impact on people’s lives in Spinalonga.
